OBITUARY: January 15, 2008
James (Jim) Hurley, vice president research and development for Viking Range Corporation, passed away Saturday evening (January 12, 2008) as a result of complications from leukemia.
Visitation will be at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home, 910 Highway 82 West, Greenwood, Mississippi, Tuesday, January 15, 2008, from 5:00 pm 7:00 pm.
A memorial service will be held at North Greenwood Baptist Church, 615 Grand Boulevard, Greenwood, Mississippi, Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at 11:00 am.
A memorial service will also be held at 11:30 am Friday, January 18, 2008, at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, 5401 Highway 153, Chattanooga, Tennessee. Burial will be at the Hamilton Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Mr. Hurley received a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. He also attended Middle Tennessee State University and Chattanooga State Technical Institute.
Jim Hurley began his career in the appliance industry in 1961 when he went to work for Tennessee Stove Works, which later became Modern Maid Company. In 1982, he became the director of research and engineering for sister company The Caloric Corporation, a Raytheon Company. In 1991, he joined Viking Range Corporation as the vice president engineering and later became vice president research and development.
Mr. Hurley holds nine U.S. and foreign patents for appliance-related inventions and designs. In 1988, he received the Excellency in Technology Award which was awarded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
