New model PGL36" (5) burner gas cooktop retailing at. $799.00 and available
May
2005. The unit features a triple port burner with 15.5K BTU. The
stainless top lacks an overflow area, and the grates are too high. We like
not.

Bosch Backs Up Talking the Talk, but Walking the Walk
Bosch claims to have the quietest dishwashers in North America, and backed up
the claim with a fancy quiet room, noise sensors and a comparison test against
the quietest models from other major manufacturer including KitchenAid, GE, Jenn-Air, Maytag.
Way excellent.
All new dishwashers with either visible controls or a hidden control/built
in look. And a fancy noise comparison test which promised that Bosch
manufactured the quietest dishwashers of any

Hitting Them Where They Live
In what we believe to be the first major attack on the U.S. 30" range
market, Bosch fired all torpedoes on the 30" range market with all gas, all electric and dual fuel
models at 3 performance tiers. Many of pro-style features were
incorporated.
-Gas tops: feature sealed 15K, 12.5K, 9.1K, and 5.5K BTU burners under full
surface cast iron black grates. The highest tier includes 400BTU simmer on the
15K burner. Burners are configured in a non-symmetric layout for bigger pots
-Electric tops: Various configurations of elements and powers and including duel
and triple element locations. Higher end models include the mTwistT knob which
lifts off for quick cleaning, and warming capability on
all elements.
-Ovens: The 25" wide 4.6 cu ft ovens comes gas or electric powered.
Gas ovens feature 17K bake and 14.5K BTU broil burners, and the electric ovens
feature 3.2kW broil, 2.0kW bake, and 1.1kW hidden element. All ovens feature a
myriad of modes including: bake, broil, convection, dehydrate, Sabbath, and self
clean, (which I used to think only dogs could do)
The highest end ranges feature oven temp probes (measuring as low as 98.6F we
wonder?), a 1.3 cu ft warming drawer with 3 temperature
settings and a telescopic rack.
The controls, the top, the oven and the attractive design are thoroughly thought
through. Our only complaint (based on our ownership) is the
timed-delayed-bake feature requiring an advanced degree to program. These units MSRP
at $1100 - $1900, are all made in the USA. A best of show.

BIAS ALERT: I own the all-gas Bosch unit. After our 19 year old
GE all gas, even "Sterno" would have garnered a best of show!
Some Perky New Dishwasher Features
Our friends at Bosch are as busy as ever thinking of fun dishwasher features
which you can use in your next dinner party conversation. For
example:
-"Vicki..... really, Frank would never step out on
you.......by the way have you heard the Apex dishwasher feature which Bosch claims uses soil sensors
and flow controls to adapt the cycle to whatever you are cleaning?"
-"Bob's sister and her 9 formlessly enormous
children....thank God they're in the pool.....dropped in unannounced, but thanks to our new Bosch dishwasher with
the low efficiency "Party"
option which jacks up the
water flow and temperature for accelerated washing, we can stay ahead of their
locust-like infestation. Bosch claims that this
feature can wash 6 place settings in 30 minutes so that the dishes can do double
duty at your next party. Now I just have to refill the pool, and double
the chlorine"
Other new features include:
-New glass touch controls on top of door, which sounds like
an expensive and pointless feature you will see no more than 5 seconds per day.
-Our favorite new feature combines practicality with market
promotion. Bosch added an "Info light" which shines a small
colored light onto the kitchen floor in front of the toe kick. This feature tells the
user when the cycle is running. It's real purpose
in our estimation will be to signal dishwasher shoppers that the Bosch units are
sooooo quiet they need "On" indicator lights. Volvo did
something similar in 1967 when they added a 6th digit to their odometer.
Some marketing folks really deserve to be on postage stamps?

"Nexxt" is
a Better Name than Dealers were Hoping For
Nexxt Washer
Bosch lauched the Nexxt line of newly designed, American size washers
and dryers.
The Nexxt Front Loader Washer features non-reversible side swing door, 3.1 cu
ft stainless steel 18 lb capacity drum, various temperature and load sensors,
15 washer programs, agitation paddle, maximum RPM of 1000 - 1200,
automatically adjustment to RPM, wash times based on fabric and water
pressure, delayed start and an optional 155 F sanitary cycle. (read
what we think about sanitary cycles)
Bosch also claims the following superlatives:
-Largest door of any machine on the market
-Highest Energy Star and CEE ratings ever achieved, using
as little as 4.78 gallons of water
-Quietest washing machine on the market (60db)
Available in white and priced $1200 - $1500.
Nexxt Dryer
The new 18 lb capacity Nexxt Dryer features a 6.2 cu ft stainless drum, a
system of sensors which "automatically senses and adjusts moisture and
temperature levels for perfect drying results". What does
"adjust moisture levels" mean? Isn't adjusting moisture levels
the reason one buys a dryer? Also features intermittent post cycle tumbling to reduce
wrinkles, a communication link between washer and dryer to coordinate wash and
dry times, and reversible side hinged door.
Both Nexxt units are too tall to fit under the counter, and the top located
controls eliminate the possibility of stacking. If these units
float your boat, great, but it is inexplicable that Bosch made this design
decision or mistake, cutting its potential sales and putting dealers in a bind
on the floor. The Whirlpool Duet/ Kenmore HE3, and the new LG line are all
stackable. Why design a frontloader, with a flat top that can't be
stacked?
Available in gas or electric and priced $650 - $750. Current MSRPs seem
to have been goosed up a bit in order to cover a $150 - $200 rebate through
Sept 30, 2004. (What!!! you think these things are free!!!)

New Bosch Range Hood
A forgettable "me too" Pyramid hood DKE, and the un-necessarily ugly,
and dated,
painted undercabinet hood, model DAH, and one reasonably interesting stainless
steel hood in
the same DAH family. The stainless version comes with its own bullnose
style which saves it.

New American-Look 7 Series Ovens
27" and 30" single and double ovens with electronic knob control,
convection with 2500W dual ring element and 2 speed convection fan. They
say, "European Convection eliminates flavor transfer between
racks". No kidding? MSRP $1550 for 27" single, $3330 for
the 30" double.

New American-Look 4 Series Ovens
27" and 30" single and double ovens with mechanical knob controls,
conventional styling (does this mean blah styling?). Convection on some
models, self clean etc, etc. Basically a de-featured 7 Series. MSRP
ranges from $1070 for 30" single to $2080 for the double.

Bosch Lifts Thermador's Best Gas Cooktop Models
Instead of retiring one of the best designed lines of gas cooktops on the market
when
Thermador freshened up its line, BSH simply shifted these winners over to
sibling Bosch. The Thermador full surface grate gas cooktops
were only slightly fiddled with by the movers. Knobs were changed, BTU
output was increased, and Thermador's franchise technology, the Xlo simmer
system was dropped. The 30" and 36" made the move but the 45" was kicked to the curb.
http://www.boschappliances.com/cooktops/80_1286.asp
Firstly, Let Us Say That We Hate All Ceran Cooktops
These new NES (4) element 30" and (5) element 36" models are
high up on the list of models we hate the least. The clever controls
include both touch controls and a knob control magnetically attached to the
glass. Turn the knob to control the burners, then lift off the
knobs for easy cleaning. This is brilliant. Black and white units have
beveled edges. Stainless units feature black glass with stainless trim on the right and left sides. 30" units
will sell for $700 - $880. 36" units will sell for $950 - $1150. Available in November 2002.
We all hate ceramic cooktops of course, but at least we can admit that with a
gun to our heads, this would be a unit we would put in our house, if only to
play with the knob.

New Washer and Dryer
The new Axxis Washers and Dryers for side by side or stacking.
The washer has a larger door and drum than earlier Bosch designs, features an
internal water heater reaching 161F, a 13 lb capacity, shorter wash times
AND shorter drying times because of the higher spin speeds (1200RPM). Bosch claims "Together
the total wash/dry time more closely approximates North American Laundry
duration"...which we assume to mean that these Euro-type front loaders
nearly match the wash+dry speed of our power hungry domestic monsters. MSRP $1000-$1230
The matching dryer features moisture and temperature sensors, a perpetual tumble
anti-crease feature and an interior light.
The vented dryer has 3 ducting installation options and is priced at $670
The non-vented condensation dryer is priced at $1000
Optional 12" pedestal with pullout tray is available.

A Funny Thing Happened on Way to the Website
While checking the Bosch website for information about the Axxis, we tripped
over this unrelated Press Release that starts by describing a washer related
disaster experienced by some seemingly random victim of appliance violence:
"(January 20, 2000 - Broadview, IL) When Jacqueline Burton's washing machine broke and gallons
of water came pouring through the ceiling to the room below in her turn-of-the-century brownstone,
she vividly came to grips with just how much water is inside a top-loading
washer
'Were the same thing to happen with an H-axis, it would have been about one-third the water - less
than 5 gallons - instead of 15,' an appliance salesperson told her. That seemed a selling point
enough for Burton to make the switch to the latest laundry technology. But that sort of saving - albeit
unusual - foretells the real story........."
Jacqueline Burton, though is also known as Jackie Burton one of the principles
of Burton Luch PR, Bosch's PR firm. hmmmmmmmm.

2001 Kitchen & Bath Show Introductions
Bosch did not attend KBIS, but information about new products was provided
to ApplianceAdvisor and is included here as a courtesy to you.
New Dishwashers
A new Integra Limited dishwasher that
features an improved dishrack that is raised or lowered with a lever release
(even fully loaded), and comes with other very excellent rack features. The
dishwasher also features the OptiMISER option (see below), and additional wash
programs. Available July 2001 for $1000 to $1100. The Integra also has a new
integrated model so your dishwasher can be camouflaged behind a cabinet matching
face. MSRP of $1200.
New Dishwasher Feature Saves Time for
Un-trainable Americans
Bosch introduced the OptiMISER optional
cycle that reduces the time to wash a load of dishes from 95 minutes to 77 minutes.
Bosch says: "OptiMISER maximizes the efficiency of the entire cycle,
delivering precisely the same wash and drying results with no compromise to any
portion of the cycle." Advisor is OK with this until they said:
"Besides saving valuable time, the OptiMISER option improves upon energy
efficiency, one of the hallmarks of Bosch performance, further reducing
consumption up to 5%." Our question is, if it works faster, and more
efficiently without any reduction in wash quality, Hell's Bells, Why isn't
OptiMISER just what the washer does when you turn it on? Why do we need to press
the "OptiMISER" button for this? Bosch replied: The Optimizer is
designed for the majority of Americans who rinse their dishes before putting
them in the dishwasher. Bosch has added the OptiMISER option as a way of
leveraging the rinsing work that American's seem to want to do anyway. Advisor
comment: Though rinsing is not normally required on new dishwashers, Americans
don't seem to be an easy lot to retrain.

New Dishwasher Quieting Technologies
Introduced many new dishwasher-quieting technologies, including a suspended
motor, and added insulation. Bosch claims that their Model 6800 is the
"World's Quietest Dishwasher". They claim that this dishwasher now
delivers as low as 46 dB as compared to the industry average of 66 dB. There are
several companies with the claim of "Quietest in America", "Our
Quietest Ever", or "Quietest Dishwasher in Morocco", but Bosch
seems to be the only one actually providing the data.
