2004 Kitchen & Bath Show Introductions
Built-in Side by Side (Model PSB42LSRBV)
Built-in, a feature of manors and mansions has finally leached out reaching the masses.....though not really.  This 25.2 cu ft 42" unit features lots of other Monogram-type features such as digital temp controls, filtered water and ice dispensing, some sort of smart automatic defrost, a rapid ice making system, and Energy Star Certification.  With an MSRP of $5200-$6500 this is really not a unit for the masses.  More likely it is ploy to allow builders to offer home buyers step-up options without mixing brands (GE/Monogram).  Is this engineering or badge engineering?  The most similar unit we could find in the Monogram line is the ZISS420DRSS, but it isn't an exact a match.  The Profile unit indicates a depth of 26-7/8 (24" is cabinet depth, and is the depth of every Sub Zero and Monogram built-in unit).  The Profile specification page confusingly mentions both a 26-7/8" AND a 24" depth, and includes a note "refrigerator will project forward, slightly beyond adjacent cabinets, depending upon your installation".  Is this built-in unit a built-in unit?  Have they measured the handle in their depth calculations or mis-measured the unit in some way?  Buyer beware.

Climate Keeper System
GE is upgrading some of the Artica fridges with a single compressor dual evaporator cooling system which, because it is now technically separated from its ugly cousin the freezer, allows for increased humidity in the refrigerator.  Increased humidity, GE promises, means better longer lasting food, world peace, and a sex life superior to low humidity refrigerator owners.
The 23 cu ft. CustomStyle configuration has an MSRP of $2599 to $3099.

2003 Kitchen & Bath Show Introductions
In-Communicado
New "Harmony" Washer Dryer pair in which the washer talks to the dryer to reduce switch and knob fatigue by the user.  This seems to be a ploy to convert sales of single dryers, and sales of single washers into sales of pairs.  GE claims stainless washer drum volume equivalent to a  4.0 cu ft drum with an agitator, but an agitator isn't in the Harmony so the Harmony is something less than 4.0 cu ft......probably 3.3 - 3.5.  Whirlpool and Maytag have each launched agitator-less top loaders, now GE launches "HydroWash" which claims to clean the clothes by spraying water and detergent  from a "rotating basket" onto the clothing which are centrifugally glued to the walls of the tub.  Also features various stain programs, a timed flow throw dispenser, and an Energy Star rating.  The Dryer has a 7.3 cu ft capacity and features 2 electronic moisture sensors, 2 temperature sensors, and a fine washables delicate setting.  Both units feature curved interchangeable LCD touch controls.  Available June 2003 and the pair retails for $2000 - 2200.  Do these new fangled Whirlpool, Maytags and GEs actually wash the clothing without constant need of service?  At $2000, they should do all of that, and tuck you in at night.

Artica Refrigerator Line Extension and Improvements
GE's adds bottom mount units to Artica line
GE adds or adapts a few new interior features to the line, for lighting, icemaking reconfiguration for additional freezer space, redesigned to the veggy drawer and beverage racks.

New Single and Double Ovens with 3 way Cooking
The GE Profile brand offers a product that seems better suited to the Monogram brand.  This family of single and double ovens feature microwave energy, thermal heat and confection to "cook up to five times faster".  They also feature, baking, broiling, roasting, defrost, warm, proof, and self-clean.  Also features automatic conversion of standard temperatures and times to speed cooking times.  Priced at $2350 - $2600 for single ovens and $3700 - $3900 for double ovens.  These are prices more at home at Monogram.  We feel that the best configuration and the worst decision is the insertion of this speed cooking technology into a 30" range at $2800 - $3000.  Great idea......but where is the gas top option?  Available October 2003.

2002 Kitchen & Bath Show Introductions
Introductions yes, but ApplianceAdvisor did not have the chance to evaluate.....or had difficulty navigating their new product information.  In any case we are much closer to the 2003 show than the 2002 show, so we will get them with the next show.

2001 Kitchen & Bath Show Introductions

GE Profile's new Artica refrigerators are new to meet the 2001 Fed Energy requirements. Features "CustomerCool" bin with "customized cooling" for rapid cooling or thawing. Accelerated ice making, wine cooling, meat thawing. Includes a process to reduce freezer burn, which is probably related to an auto-defrost control. Contoured styling. Filtered water/ice dispenser for even larger containers. Includes lots of other neat shelving and drawer systems. Side by side retails for $1700-$2800. Top mounted units retail for $950-$1200. Does Monogram Have this Yet?
New GE ceramic electric cooktop with electronic touch sensing controls, and pot size and pot presence sensing. The pot sensors adjust the size of the juiced radiant elements to the size of the pot used, or shutdown the element within 60 seconds of the removal of a pot. Cool. Also includes a digital timer, child lock-out, bridge elements and warming area features. Avail spring 2001 in sizes 30" at $1150 to $1350, and 36" at $1300 to $1500.

New Dishwasher
New GE Profile Dishwasher with new curved style. Has 3 wash arms, 6 spray directions, soil sensors, plastic interior, and holds up to 16 place settings. GE promises quicker water heat up, and "exceptionally quiet performance". Without data from GE of course it is just PR malarkey. Retail price from $550 to $750.

New OTR
New GE Profile 36" wide over the range microwave oven with halogen lights.
Microwave: 1.8 cu ft capacity. 1000 Watts, cooking sensors.
Vent: 300 CFM, 4-speed blower, hidden vent louvers that fold away when not in use.
Available June 2001. A 36" wide OTR microwave with only 300 CFM is probably not such a good thing as it will tend to be installed over high performance 36" professional style appliances, some of which come with BBQ. GE claims that this (36" width) is "the first of its kind."

New Glass Top Ranges
New GE Profile slide-in drop-in electric ceramic top ranges. Glass touch controls, large oven window. Cooktop includes dual elements, bridge elements and warming elements. GE claims that this is the "largest capacity oven in the industry - larger than any leading manufacturer's oven on a slide-in range". 8 pass power bake, and 6 pass broil elements, European true convection (meaning that there is a third loop element outside the oven can but around the convection fan). Retail priced $1650 to $2000. Leading manufacturer's are those based in Michigan, Kentucky, and Iowa. As for the other 47 states, we are on our own.

2000 Kitchen & Bath Show Introductions

Nautilus Dishwasher
2 washer arms, hard food disposer, optional use water heater, and some sort of quiet package. All in all it seems like a great package for the price of $229 - $369, but GE should have provided some sound test data.

Largest Capacity 24" Stacking Washer/Dryer

New 24" Space Maker washer dryer with 2.7 cuft capacity, "the biggest wash capacity stack-installed washer in a 24" width". Comes with a fluorescent light, electronic controls, load sensing to set water level, high spin speed, and 10 cycle options. We are disappointed that the product is not listed as an Energy Star product. http://www.geappliances.com/pressroom/nahb/lndry/24inchwd.htm

Prodigy Washer and Dryer

This new washer has 29 programming options to change wash time, agitation speed and soak time. Comes with a balancing feature to keep unbalanced loads from walking off with your wash. The Prodigy dryer features an "un-wrinkle" setting to keep the dryer spinning for up to 15 minutes after the drying is complete to keep wrinkles from setting up. You must choose this feature when you start….which is a little goofy, and not energy efficient, since we would guess that everyone would choose this energy wasting feature not knowing where or what they would be doing at the end of the cycle. Also has a "Dryel" setting for home dry cleaning. http://www.geappliances.com/pressroom/nahb/lndry/prescare.htm

High Speed Oven

Cooktop Integrated With Counterlevel Downdraft

The ventilator can be pulled out for service. The advantage is that it seems that this design fits into standard cutout without the need to pull out the skill saw to make room for a rear downdraft. The disadvantage is that counter level downdrafts simply don't work. Heat rises. Are building inspectors really so dumb? http://www.geappliances.com/pressroom/nahb/ckngprdcts/dwndrft.htm
