A Little Too Much Coffee in Seattle
The Icebox people added touch screens and the Windows CE operating system to
their neat but yet very expensive kitchen internet appliance.
Available 4th Qtr 2002. MSRP at $3000. It sounded like a good idea
in 2001, but now we know the price, and the price is beyond absurd.
For $3000 you could buy a fully loaded PC with
giga-gobs of memory, CD burner, DVD player, modem, the Windows XE OS, a
color printer and a monitor, then, in a fit of rage, bash each of these
components into sub-atomic dust with a pie roller, then replace all of this
equipment only to lose it again, (and the kids I might add), in a very nasty
divorce, which as part of the decree, required classes in "anger
management" and yet, yet, yet, get this, yet still have enough left to
replace all that freaking equipment for a 3rd time. It really fries my
eggs.

The Real Kitchen Internet
Appliance
ApplianceAdvisor is ready to take a
stand on internet connectivity in the kitchen. While it likely that our major
appliances will be integrated into the future wired home, we do not believe that
bundling expensive flat screens and touch pads on your refrigerator and clothes
washer will ever make much sense. Leaving video messages for family members on a
refrigerator's $400 video screen is a dumb idea. Make that DUMB! Never mind the
service implications of a bundled piece of equipment. Instead, dedicated
products configured similarly to the Icebox are the future of the world wide
webbed kitchen. With a broadband connection, Icebox provides the internet, DVD,
TV, and home monitoring. We suggest that Electrolux, Maytag, GE, and Whirlpool
let their engineers work on something more productive.
